original poems written for special occassions

sample poems

The samples on this page are all original poems. The images for all but one poem were provided by the final owner. The one exception is the image with the flag and gravestones image which was created by the poet.

Every one of these poems was received with great delight and effusive thanks. All of these poems have been framed and proudly displayed by the recipients. In at least one case, I have been told that the poem is now the owner's most treasured possession.

ode to gina

This poem was written two weeks after the death of my lover/soulmate. It is both a tribute to her memory and a lament. This one is heartfelt. I'm not even sure if I should be putting it here. It may seem to trivialize it. That is not my intent. I want only to share it. read plain text version

sample 2

Original poems, like the ones shown on this page, are always great anniversary presents. This one was done for a 40th wedding anniversary for a couple in England. The photograph was supplied by their daughter, who read the poem at the anniversary party. She told me that many people came up to her after she read the poem to tell her the gift was wonderfully thoughtful. Supplied in digital format suitable for printing at 8" x 10" or smaller. read plain text version

This poem was written for a 14th wedding anniversary. The request specified a 5" x 7" size so the framed image could be kept on a night stand. The size limitations required a shorter poem and a slightly different layout than an 8 x 10 print would have allowed. Printed as a 5" x 7" image suitable for framing and placement on a nightstand. read plain text version

An Ode to Gina

The poem shown here was not done as a commission piece. It was a Valentine's poem for the woman I love. She was in the hospital facing major surgery on the day after Valentine's Day. It is shown here, more as a memorial than a sample. She passed away in early December of the same year. 8" x 10" print read plain text version

sample 2

This poem was written for a first-time grandmother. Her daughter and new grand-daughter lived with her. She commented on how much the baby had changed the household. The poem was written with the intention of expressing the feelings she had conveyed to me. Delivered as an 8" x 10" print on glossy photo paper. read plain text version

May he rest in peace

Another poem that is more of a memorial than a sample. This was written after the death of a young man who was killed in Iraq. I am acquainted with the family of his widow and felt moved to write something to commemorate his passing. The way the piece turned out seemed too negative to share with his family. I have only shown it to select members of his widow's family. The common response is thoughtful silence. After all, what can one say in response to such a tragic death? read plain text version

forever

I love you more today
than I did the day we wed
I can't imagine anyone
whom I could love instead

We've shared so much together
both the laughter and the tears
Through good times and through bad
we've shared our hopes and fears

My love will last forever
as the years keep going by
you are my heart and soul
until the day I die

Love will endure

On that long ago day,
in early September,
the vows were exchanged
I'm sure they remember.

Marriage is sacred.
A commitment for life
The vows are eternal -
for both husband and wife

The years have slipped by
until now it's two-score.
Yet, still they are here
both ready for more.

We are gathered here today
Our wishes to bestow
For Pat and Pete have shared
a love that few can know

We wish them much happiness
In the years yet to be
May their love still endure
for all the world to see

you made it look easy

love rarely comes alone
loss comes trailing after
eventually the pain of loss
replaces the joy and laughter

it was fear of that loss
that kept me in my shell
until you came along
to free me from my hell

you made it look easy
even while i fought
you taught me not to fear
you gave me what i sought

for the first time in years
i felt the glow of love
even tho it was a stranger
it fit my soul, like a glove

we made grand plans
as new couples always do
how the gods must be laughing
while our laughs have been few

we didn't know what was coming
no one can know tomorrow
every day might shine with happiness
or be shadowed and darkened by sorrow

while no one could have known
what life was bringing our way
it wouldn't have made a difference
if I knew then, what i know today

i've discovered true happiness
in the midst of despair
it's found at your side
all joy is found there

through all the pain and stress
despite all the sorrow and tears
how it happen'd i'll never know,
yet your love overcame my fears

never would i have dreamed
how my love for you has grown
the chance to feel your love
is the best thing i've ever known

the angels smiled

I stand watching as she sleeps.
Watching this tiny baby girl.
More precious than any possession.
More rare than a perfect pearl.

I reach in and smooth her blanket.
She seems so peaceful in her sleep.
My hand hovers over her face.
My love is so strong I almost weep.

I try to turn and walk away.
Minutes later I'm still there,
watching this sweet treasure
that's been given to our care.

I think of all the changes
she has brought into our lives
Now small troubles are forgotten.
Our one goal - that she survives.

I wonder, "why were we so blessed"?
and can only stand and stare.
I would gladly give my life for her.
Then, I say a heartfelt prayer.

I pray to God to watch over her.
This precious, blameless child
She brings joy to all who see her.
When she was born the angels smiled.

I stand watching…

R.I.P.

He left a boy
fresh from school.
He returned a man -
broken and battered
beyond recognition.
When his country called
he stepped forward,
as young men are wont to do.
And, as has happened
so often throughout history,
he was sacrificed
for the grand ideals of politicians.
He gave his life
in a far away land,
striving to bring peace
to a shattered nation.
Now he lies in his grave,
at the tender age of 22.
He leaves behind
grieving parents
and a youthful bride.
There will be no children
to carry on his name.
No future glory awaits.
No grand deeds are yet to be done.
All that is left
are the memories of a too-short life
and the legacy of his sacrifice.
Only time will tell
if his death was worthwhile.
And, even that
depends on who writes the history books.

May he rest in peace

misty mountain sanity

i long for those joyful moments
when we laughed, and we smiled
and we loved

those days filled with sunshine
whether cloudy or no
each day new

the mountains weren't so steep
the climb seemed easier
now it's alone

there is no one to lean on
i have no one to love
you are gone...

what will i do without you?
who will make me smile?
what of love?

our dreams carried us ever higher
then we crashed to earth
with broken wings

i must stop now, to dry the tears
face cupped in my hands
taking deep breaths

to stop the sobs...

you are gone...

life goes on...?

how?
